The Korean women’s baseball team, led by Yang Sang-moon, suffered a five-inning cold game loss to Canada, 0-10, in Group A of the 2024 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Qualifier at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay, Canada, on Thursday (14 April). The tournament will be played in seven-inning games and a cold game will be declared if the score is 10 runs or more after the fifth inning.

Starting pitcher Kim Bomi pitched a scoreless first inning, but was unable to hold on. Following Kim’s 2⅓ innings of four runs (three earned), Kwak Min-jung pitched 1⅓ innings of four runs and Lee Ji-sook pitched 1⅓ innings of two runs, while the bats failed to produce a single run.

After giving up two runs on a hit-by-pitch and a home run with one out in the bottom of the second inning, the team lost the lead in the top of the third inning when the leadoff batter reached on an infield error. This was followed by a walk and a single.

After giving up two more runs in the third inning to fall behind 0-4, the team surrendered five runs in the fourth inning. After a walk and a hit, they got the first two outs, but then gave up a single and four straight pitches to get the final out. The runs quickly piled up.

Trailing 0-9, the team gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth inning, followed by a game-tying single, and suffered a 10-10 cold-game defeat.

With this win, the Women’s National Baseball Team concluded their five-game group stage in Canada. The target was a minimum of two wins, but the team was disappointed with a one-run loss to Hong Kong in their first game. Japan holds the top spot in the women’s baseball world rankings, followed by the United States, Canada and Australia. South Korea’s national women’s baseball team is a hobby, with no professional team and no proper training facilities. However, with the arrival of Yang Sang-moon and a team of professional coaches, the team’s performance has improved significantly and they have shown promise, winning a bronze medal at the Asian Cup in Hong Kong.

But the bar was still high on the world stage. With a five-game losing streak, South Korea failed to qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Canada next year. In Group A, the United States topped the table with five wins, Canada finished second with four wins and one loss, and Mexico pulled off a surprise upset to finish third in the group with three wins and two losses over Australia.
