Spain has won the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Women’s World Cup for the first time ever. Spain beat England 1-0 in the final of the Australia-New Zealand Women’s World Cup 2023 at Stadium Australia in Sydney, Australia, on 20 June, thanks to a goal from Olga Carmona. Spain made history by winning the tournament for the first time in eight years, despite being a ‘latecomer’ to the tournament since the 2015 edition in Canada. Spain also avenged last year’s European Women’s Football Championship (Women’s Euro 2022) quarter-final defeat to England. The Spaniards lost 1-2 in extra-time to England, who went on to win the tournament.
Spain beat Costa Rica 3-0 in their opening group game, followed by a 5-0 thrashing of Zambia, before losing 0-4 in their final match against Japan. However, they bounced back with a 5-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16, and defeated the Netherlands and Sweden in the quarter-finals and semi-finals to reach the final.
