South Korea’s men’s basketball team will miss the Paris 2024 Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament.
“바카라사이트We have informed the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) that we will not be able to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Syria,” the Korea Basketball Association said on 8 August.
South Korea was scheduled to compete in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Syria from 12 December.
Winning the eight-nation tournament would have earned them a spot in the final qualifiers for the Paris Olympics, but with Syria listed as a travel ban country, they will not be able to compete.
This means that South Korean men’s basketball hasn’t qualified for the Olympic Games since the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 2000 Sydney Games.
Of course, even if South Korea had won the Syrian tournament, which was a preliminary qualifier for the Paris Olympics, their chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games were not great as they would have to defeat European teams in the final qualifier.
However, it was a shame to miss out on the opportunity to gain more international experience in Syria and the final qualifier, where a win would have put them through.
We are also concerned about FIBA’s punishment for missing the tournament.
South Korea was disqualified from this year’s FIBA World Cup Asia Zone Qualifiers due to the potential spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The men’s team, led by Chu Il-seung, will prepare for the Hangzhou Asian Games in September.
The women’s team failed to finish in the top four at the FIBA Asia Cup in June, also missing out on the final qualification for the Paris Olympics.
